Deformation characters and its tectonic evolution of the Southwest Taiwan Basin
【Abstract】 Through the interpretation of the seismic profile across the NE South China Sea region, combined with the analysis of free-air gravity anomaly and magnetic anomaly, it was found that the Southwest Taiwan Basin’s structure is in NW-NEE direction and it has a special double-layer sedimentary style. It’s a Cenozoic rifty basin which has a close relationship with the evolution of the South China Sea. From the late Cretaceous the basin begun its rifting action. During the Paleogene, extensional structures, including normal faults and half-grabens controlled by them, developed and the basin was covered by the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene deposit. At the end of Oligocene the basin was influenced by contractive action and developed some thrust faults and inversion tectonics. The evolution character is "Extension first, contraction". After Miocene the basin began its thermal subsidence.
