【Abstract】 Tantou Basin and Ruyang Basin of Western Henan are located in the bordering areas of southern margin of the Northern China block and Qinling orogenic belt, both of them are red beds basins in western Henan province in Mesozoic and Cenozoic. According to the bivalves fossils and pollen data during this work, combined with the previous dinosaur and other fossils, this paper has studied and compared the stratigraphic age, the sedimentary characteristics, paleoclimate characteristics, and structural background of the two basins. Through our research, we revised the previous division and correlation of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic stratum of Tantou and Ruyang basin. Tantou basin was filled with an alluvial fan to fan delta to lake coarse-grained deposition, with a sediment gravity flow characteristic, and it experienced a Lake-level rise process. Ruyang basin filled with a braided river to braided river delta deposition, which had a nature of the traction current. The lake level generally experienced a up to down process, forming a progressive to regressive, braided to braided river delta sequence. During the deposition of the two basins, it had a arid tropical climate, but it showed a trend that from drought and heat to humid; we analyzed and compared the development of the two basins from the tectonic evolution, provenance, paleoclimate characteristics, and found that structural factors plays a decisive role in the control of the sedimentary facies, but the climate and the amount of sediment supply also had a significant impact.
