大学校训研究

A Study of University Motto

【摘要】 大学校训作为大学校园文化建设的一个重要组成部分,对大学的建设和发展,大学人的培养发挥着极其重要的作用。本文综合运用历史法、文献法、比较法和个案研究等研究方法,旨在对大学校训进行系统、全面的研究,揭示大学校训的内涵、特性、历史发展轨迹,阐述中国大学校训与西方大学校训的联系和区别,探讨大学校训设计的基础、原则、主体和设计程序。此外,文章还对一些特色校训进行深入、细致的研究,以期获得具有丰富文化内涵的校训案例和强有力的事实依据。大学校训是大学针对组织内部全体成员制定的具有导向、激励作用的词语,是大学培养高级专门人才、探索高深知识和进行社会服务过程中的基本准则和要求,是大学理念、大学文化、大学精神的集中体现。大学校训具有稳定性与变革性相统一、简约性与丰富性相统一、传统性与创新性相统一、规范性与导向性相统一的特点。就纵向发展而言,中国大学校训大体经历了六个发展阶段,每个发展阶段体现出不同的特征;就横向比较而言,中、西方大学校训无论是在内容上还是在形式上都存在较大差异。从内容上看,中国大学校训体现着对知识的追求、道德的完善,强调稳定和谐;西方大学校训也体现出对知识、真理的追求,但是他们更主张自治和自由,并且具有浓厚的宗教色彩。从形式上看,中国大学校训以“二言八字”、“四言八字”为主,动词性的词语在校训中广泛采用;西方大学校训其表现形式灵活多样、不拘一格,并且以名词性的短语和句子为主。本文在对上述问题论述的基础上,对大学校训的设计也进行研究,指出大学理念是大学校训设计的理论基础;大学的办学定位是大学校训设计的现实依据;本民族的文化传统和学校自身的文化沿袭是大学校训设计的文化渊源。大学校训在设计过程中应把握凝练性、彰显人文性、力求简洁性、强化独特性和注重时代性。大学校长作为大学建设、发展、兴盛的领导者与大学校训的设计密切相关,大学校长的教育理念、专业背景、性格特征和个性魅力在大学设计过程中发挥重要的作用。大学校训的设计过程实质上是一个以校长为核心,经过一系列设计步骤而形成的团队的创新过程。

【Abstract】 The motto of a university, as an important part of the university culture, has significant effects on construction and development of the university and instructing the university students as well. Based on the historical, documentary, comparative and case-analytical research methodology, this thesis aims to analyze the motto of the university systematically and comprehensively, reveals its connotation, characteristics and historical development path. In addition, this thesis elaborates the relationship and distinction between the motto of Chinese University and the motto of the Western University, discusses the basis and the principles of design of the motto and the roles played by the university presidents. Moreover, this thesis analyzes some characteristic mottos systematically so as to acquire the cases of motto with rich cultural connotation and the factual evidence.The motto of a university is regarded as the oriented and invigorative words for all members of an organization, and the basic principles and requirements of the university in the process of nurturing talents, exploring advanced knowledge and serving society. It is also the embodiment of the idea, culture and spirit of the university. The motto of a university has characteristics of unifying stability and revolution, simplicity and abundance, tradition and innovation, and orientation and convention.From the perspective of the vertical development, the motto of university experienced six phases, which have respective characteristics; from the perspective of horizontal comparison, not only the forms but also the contents between Chinese and the western motto are quite different. On the aspect of content, the motto of Chinese university embodies the pursuit of knowledge, the moral perfection, and emphasizes stability and harmony, while the motto of the Western university not only demonstrates the pursuit of truth and knowledge, but also emphasizes autonomy and freedom, and has strong religious feature. On the aspect of form, the motto of Chinese university is characterized as " Two Sentences, Eight Words", or "Four Sentences, Eight words". The verb phrases are widely used in a motto, while the form of western university motto is more flexible and various, and the noun phrases and sentences are used.On the basis of discussion of the above issues, the thesis also researches the designing of motto, presents the idea of the university is the theoretical foundation of motto designing, the orientation of the University is the factual basis of it, the national cultural traditions and the culture of the university are sources of it. The motto of University should be designed briefly, simply, and time, humanities and characteristics should be considered. In addition, the president of university, as a leader who leads to construct, develop and boost the university, is also closely related to the design of motto. The idea of teaching, professional background, characteristics and personality of president are important factors in the process of designing the motto of university.
