【Abstract】 Based on the research literature, the essay examines the gender attribute in the history of Chinese Americans. Ever since the rapidly industrialized period in the United States from the 1860s, American white men suffered a crisis of masculinities, which triggered an antagonism toward racial minority like Chinese. The white masculinities tried to establish a hegemony by putting Chinese males into a peripheral status, just like women in the gender equation. Chinese Americans thus experienced racial discrimination in the process of gender manoeuvring. Chinese Americans fought against the mechanism in acts like labor protest, court suits. Although these actions might not improve Chinese American lives all the times, they indicated the Chinese American masculinities in their own ways. Throughout the development, Chinese Americans, while prejudiced by the American society, illustrated their efforts to control their own life.
