明清西方传教士的汉语学习与文化交流(1582-1795)

On Western Missionaries’ Studying Chinese and Cultural Exchanges in Ming and Qing Dynasties (1582-1795)

【摘要】 自晚明基督教第三次传入中国以来,入华的外籍传教士一直坚持“适应策略”,走“文化传教”的路线。他们学习汉语,甚至满语,对这些语言的学习和运用,给他们的传教活动产生了不容忽视的积极影响,也使他们更好地扮演了16-18世纪中西文化交流的重要使者的角色。本文截取明清二百余年的时间作为研究范围,主要围绕来华传教士在学习语言方面的事迹和影响进行考证和论述,既包括他们如何看待汉语,也涵盖在学习过程涉及到的方式、地点及能力等问题,从而再现他们如何实现将学习动机和传教目的统一的历史过程,并探讨了在此领域中出现的一边倒式赞扬的现象。同时,本文以传教环境为标准,将研究范围划分为三个时期,把明末基督教传入后的教务发展置于中国特定的社会政治环境下,对这些时期和一些代表性人物的语言学习事迹和活动进行个案研究。传教士们学习中国语言,传播宗教,产生了极其重要的影响,他们由此成为16-18世纪中西文化交流的重要使者,对他们在这场文化交流中的事迹和作用的观照也就成为保持研究完整性不可或缺的内容。通过对传教方式与教徒构成以及社会政治环境的分析,本文还在各章节中对彼时教务发展盛况、“文化传教”概念的提法是否恰当等问题进行了反思。

【Abstract】 It’s the third times that the Christianity was introduced into China in the later Ming dynasty, the foreign missionaries in China has always adhered to the "accommodation strategies". They learn Chinese, even Manchurian. To learn and use such languages produced positive influences in their missionary activity, and also made them play better role of messengers between Chinese and western cultures exchanges in 16-18th centuries.This dissertation takes more than 200 years of Ming and Qing dynasties as range limit, focusing on the deeds and functions of the missionaries’ earning languages in sermon and cultural exchanges, which not only include how they treat Chinese and also the means, locations and abilities of learning languages, thus reappears the process that the missionaries united the purpose of preaching and motives of learning languages and at the same time discuss the phenomenon of one-sided praise in related field. Meanwhile, the range limit is divided into three periods by the environment of sermon, letting the research on spread of Christianity in Ming and Qing dynasties be in the specific social and political environment of China, and do case studies to the period of some typical characters, events and activities in learning languages. The missionaries learned languages, preached religion and made the extremely important influence, then became important messengers between Chinese and the western cultural exchanges. Focusing on their deeds and activities in cultural exchanges is also the indispensable contents to keep dissertation integrity. To analyze the means and political environment of sermon, this dissertation, it also reflect on some questions, such as the development of Christianity and the concept of "sermon by culture".
