【Abstract】 In recent years, China’s relations with the EU countries have become more and more important. During this progress, economic and trade exchanges are usually accompanied with cultural communications and mutual understanding, which requires contemporary intellectuals to support in, knowledge and theory in transcultural communication. Although it is necessary to discuss Europe as a whole, it is more important to study different European countries as specific cases. Only based on these case studies, mutual understanding can be built without serious and negative misreading and misinterpretation. The pattern of acceptance of Chinese culture in other European countries doesn’t apply in the case of Finland, because Finland has a different and special history during the national independence progress and Sino-Finnish exchanges. The specific case needs to be studied in a historical perspective and the specific context. This dissertation "Study on Finnish translations of Chinese Culture" is especially based on the Nordic country—Finland. By combing and studying the history of the Finnish translations of Chinese culture, this dissertation aims to illuminate how the Chinese culture has been cognized in the context of Finland. The study is focused on the research of Finnish translations of the Chinese culture in the historic background of Sino-Finnish cultural exchanges in a wide range. First, through the basic historic study, this dissertation clarifies the progress of Chinese and Finnish cultural exchanges, analyses the historical influence of Chinese culture in Finland, and summarizes the characteristics of different periods. Based on a large firsthand collection of Finnish and European translations and writings about Chinese culture and more comprehensive understanding of domestic research on European Sinology, this dissertation analyzes translations of Chinese culture in the Finnish context from the beginning of the20th century to today with a methodology of diachronic study, especially the translations of Chinese literature and philosophy. Through the in-depth study on the translators’backgrounds, the source languages of translation, the context of national development and international relations, this dissertation explains the characteristics of Finnish case in transcultural translation and its different periods. By means of methodology of Hermeneutics and the theory of Translation, the author analyzes transcultural and cross-national literature translating. Especially by a case study of translation of Chinese poetry, this dissertation exposes the changes during the Finnish process of poetry translation, and the "Creative Treason" of Finnish translations under the influence of Imagism from Western academic world. In the aspect of the changes in source languages, the author tries to analyze the impact of European Sinology on the Finnish case and the development Finnish sinology. This case study of Finnish cultural communication is also significant for other studies of "non-centered" countries. Different from other central European countries, Finland has been a non-central and peripheral state in Europe, in terms of the geography, political and economic development, and cultural evolution. Thus as a typical peripheral country, the influence and acceptance of oriental culture, especially Chinese culture, in the Finnish context have enormous differences from other "centered" European countries, and expose its own natures and characteristics. This dissertation attempts to clarify these differences with an in-depth analysis of specific history and culture. So we can really excavate the characteristics and pattern of different European nation cognizing and understanding China.
