【Abstract】 Mr. Zhang Shi’s book The Desolate Back: Zhang Zhidong and China’s Steel Industry was published by the Commercial Press in 2010. Subsequently, Mr. Zhang continuously collected information, supplemented and revised the book. In 2022, the People’s Publishing House reprinted the book through a revised edition. The book centers around the Hanyang Iron Works founded in 1890 and reassesses the steel industry founded by Zhang Zhidong a hundred years ago. Especially it clarifies the“three major mistakes”in the academic circles over the past century regarding Zhang Zhidong’s founding of the steel industry and restores the historical truth. This book has four prominent features: firstly, it clarifies the source and challenges the old statement; secondly, it is skilled in textual research and has rich historical materials; thirdly, it returns to the historical scene with a broad perspective; fourthly, it has strong readability and strong academic flavor. Mr. Zhang Shi accumulated more than ten years of skills to write this book, among which the three spirits of “focusing on one”, “catching up with the times”, and “indifference to fame and wealth”were important factors for the success of the book.更多还原
