Narrative Gaps and Imaginative Writing:Inflation in Shanghai Novels During the War of Resistance Against Japan
【Abstract】 Following the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1937, urban life in Shanghai was transformed into a wartime state that persisted until the victory in August 1945. The Japanese invasion and gradual occupation, coupled with economic mismanagement by the Nationalist government and the Wang Jingwei regime, led to rampant inflation, becoming a defining feature of Shanghai’s wartime economy. Novels from this period reflect and engage with the critical issue of inflation, portraying the sharp rise in prices, shifts in social and occupational status, and the surge of speculative activities. Analyzing the economic realities of Shanghai as China’s financial hub during this time reveals that the authors of Shanghai novels not only captured the true conditions of wartime but also underwent notable shifts in their text writing. These narrative shifts illuminate the emotional states of the authors and underscore the distinctive power of literature in responding to historical circumstances.
