【Abstract】 The selected Fu(prose-poem) in Lü Zuqian’s Song Wenjian(A Collection of Poems and Essays of the Northern Song Dynasty) provides us with the best model for studying the history of Fu in the Northern Song Dynasty by virtue of its considerable number, complete style, and rich subject matter. Lü Zuqian presents a unique style different from the Fu collections of the time owing to his comprehensive consideration of the scope of Fu writers, his unique insight in the criteria of selecting Fu works and his reconciliation and compromise attitude towards the ancient and regulated Fu styles, showing, to a certain extent, a deviation from and correction of the mainstream culture of the Fu world in the Northern Song Dynasty. This deviation was influenced by the repeated controversy between poetry and scripture at that time. It was the inevitable result of the environment where the sense of discerning and breaking the style was strengthened in the Song Dynasty. And it was also closely related to Lü Zuqian’s unique identity as a teacher. Song Wenjian, in the form of an anthology, pioneered the identification of Fu styles, and unintentionally influenced the retrogressive tendency of the debate on ancient and regulated Fu styles in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. His unique selection of the Fu writers and their works contributes to the canonization of Fu works of the Northern Song dynasty in the later generations.
