【Abstract】 This essay uses a rhetorical theory of narrative to address the longstanding question about the quality of Huckleberry Finn’s final chapters. Drawing on Rabinowitz’s examination of audiences and Phelan’s work on the types and effects of unreliable narration,we analyze the affective,ethical,and aesthetic dimensions of the relationships among Twain,Huck,and their audiences throughout the novel. In the first thirty-one chapters Twain’s skill with Huck’s nave narration offers a richly satisfying reading experience. In the Evasion section,however,Twain shifts his technique in a way that irreparably damages all three dimensions of our readerly experience.更多还原
