The Excavation of the Tombs of the Warring-States Period at Xixin in Qingzhou City, Shandong
【Abstract】 In April through December 2004, Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Qingzhou Museum conducted joint excavation to the large tomb at Xixin. This tomb, located in the royal mausoleum precinct of the Qi State of the Warring-States Period had very large size, which was the largest one of the same type of tombs excavated to date in Shandong. The grave was reduced as steps from the top to the bottom, in which the stone-built coffin chamber surrounded by five attendant storage pits on the ledge was found. The grave goods unearthed from this tomb included potteries, gold and silver wares, bronzes, jades and objects made of bone and lacquered wooden wares, of which two jades and one silver dou-stemmed bowl were the most exquisite ones. The size and location of this tomb showed that the occupant would be the aristocrat or member of the royal family of the Qi State. The construction of this tomb was very fine; the carefully processed grave wall, the gridiron-shaped rammed-earth fill, the huge coffin chamber built of tidily trimmed stone blocks stuck together with melted iron, and the dug-out stepped passages, were all very rare in the burials of the same period, which provided valuable materials for the in-depth research on the burials of the Qi State.
