Research on the Impact of Farmers’ Non-agricultural Employment Adequacy on Farmland Transfer Behaviors: From the Perspective of Gender Differences
【Abstract】 Based on the survey data of 960 households in 12 counties of 4 provinces in the main grain producing regions, this paper reconstructs the analysis framework of non-agricultural employment adequacy from multiple dimensions such as non-agricultural employment time, employment region and employment stability, and uses Probit, Tobit and Order-Probit models to explore the impact of the adequacy of non-agricultural employment on farmland transfer behavior of farmers from the perspective of gender differences. The results are as follows:(1) Regarding the decision-making behavior of farmland transfer, the sufficient non-agricultural employment level can promote farmland transfer behaviors. The results of gender differences at the individual level show that the male’s non-agricultural employment time and non-agricultural employment stability have significant positive and negative impacts on agricultural land transfer decisions, respectively.Female’s non-agricultural employment time, non-agricultural employment area and non-agricultural employment stability all have a significant positive impact on the decision-making of agricultural land transfer;(2) In terms of the selection behavior of agricultural land transfer contracts, the adequacy of female non-agricultural employment facilitates the signing of formalized contracts by farmer, while the stability of male non-agricultural employment reduces the probability of signing formalized contracts. The research results show that, compared with men, women’s non-agricultural employment adequacy has more significant role in promoting agricultural land transfer decision-making behaviors, and the sufficiency of female non-agricultural employment is favorable for farmers to sign formal contracts. Therefore, it is necessary to increase investment in human capital of rural labors, especially female labor. At the same time, we should vigorously develop non-agricultural industries, improve the adequacy of non-agricultural employment for rural labors, and realize the coordinated development of labor market and agricultural land transfer market.
