【Abstract】 Kazuo Ishiguro, a contemporary Japanese-born British novelist, has been warmlyreceived by the reading public and the academic community. Up till now, Ishiguro haspublished six novels which have brought him prestigious literary prizes and literaryreputation.Never Let Me Go (2005),Kazuo Ishiguro’ latest novel, was nominated for the2005Booker Prize, the2005U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award, and for the2006Arthur C. Clarke award for science fiction. Never Let Me Go was alsorecognized by TIME magazine as the best novel of2005. The novel is written in thefirst-person narrative style. Kazuo Ishiguro uses a clone as the character narrator. As aclone, the character narrator Kathy H reminisces about childhood at Hailshamboarding school, adolescence at cottage and work experience as a carer. They aredenied the basic human rights and predestined to furnish humans with body partsbefore they get old. In the face of harsh reality, the clones passively accept their tragicfates without resistance and escape.Since the publication of Never Let Me Go, it has gained much attention from thewestern critics. As the mainstay of post-classical narratology, rhetorical narratologyputs great emphasis on the multilayered communication from author, narrator andaudience. As an internationally recognized literary scholar, James Phelan is the leaderof the third generation of Chicago School. According to James Phelan, narrativejudgments perform a vital function in rhetorical narratology. On the basis of therelated research, the dissertation,in hope of opening up a new dimension, purports toexamine narrative judgments in this novel from the perspective of rhetoricalnarratology. The dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter one is the introduction whichencompasses the life and writing of Kazuo Ishiguro, the plot of Never Let Me Go andits literature review. Chapter two focuses on the theoretical framework of this study, narrative judgments from rhetorical narratology. The theory of narrative judgmentsput forward by James Phelan is composed of three parts, namely, interpretivejudgments, ethical judgments, and aesthetic judgments. Chapter three examinesinterpretive judgments upon “the harvesting of the clones’ organs” made by thecharacter narrator, the implied author and the authorial audience. Chapter four investigates ethic judgments upon “the harvesting of the clones’ organs” made by thecharacter narrator, the implied author and the authorial audience. Chapter fiveexplores aesthetic judgments through the analysis of reconstruction and evaluation ofrhetoric aesthetics. Chapter six is the conclusion. After summarizing the essentialpoints in the dissertation, it points out that the interaction and interconnection ofinterpretive judgments, ethical judgments, and aesthetic judgments shape the novelinto an organic whole. Furthermore, narrative judgments can broaden the readers’horizon.
