【副题名】以《泰坦尼克号》为例
【摘要】 所谓多模态话语(Multimodal discourse)是指超越作为社会符号的语言,使用两种或者多种符号资源(语言、图像、音乐、空间、手势等)完成意义建构的社会实践。在全球视觉文化冲击的今天,多模态性(Multimodality)日益成为日常生活不可或缺的一部分,对多模态话语的研究同时具有理论价值与现实意义。本文建立在系统功能语言学Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL)的理论背景之下,以Kress和Van Leeuwen(1996)的视觉语法(Visual Grammar,VG)为基础,构建多模态话语分析模型(Multimodal Discourse Analysis, MDA)为工具对电影语篇《泰坦尼克号》进行多模态话语分析。《泰坦尼克号》作为奥斯卡历史上唯一同时获得最多奖项和最多提名的电影,成为好莱坞20世纪末的象征。电影是四维的,电影语篇涉及到语言、图像、音乐、文本、声音等多种模态,有助于研究多模态话语中多种模态的配合和协同作用。而多模态话语分析理论也为电影研究中提供了另一种电影研究的切入点。本文首先对多模态话语分析和电影语篇的研究现状进行述评,引出本文旨在以功能语言学为基础对电影语篇《泰坦尼克号》进行多模态话语分析的目标并阐明其意义。其二,在功能语法和视觉语法的理论基础上,本文尝试建立一个适用于对电影语篇《泰坦尼克号》进行多模态话语分析的综合框架。再次,在此框架的指导下对电影语篇《泰坦尼克号》进行再现意义、互动意义和构图意义的多模态话语分析,从叙事和概念分析其再现意义,从接触、社会距离和视角以及情态等方面分析其互动意义,从信息值、取景和显著性分析其构图意义。最后从视觉和听觉的多种模态之间的配合和协同关系,阐明电影语篇中多模态解析的意义,通过听觉和视觉的自然整合和互动,共同构建电影语篇的整体意义。本研究通过对电影语篇《泰坦尼克号》的个案分析,发现多模态话语分析理论,尤其是视觉语法对分析电影语篇具有很强的适用性,不仅实现了对多模态话语分析领域的拓展,深化了对此理论的认识,而且为欣赏此部电影提供了一个新的视角,使观众能够以语言以外的模态来感悟它们在揭示电影主题方面的意义,从而提升了观众对此电影的欣赏水平。
【Abstract】 Multimodal discourse is a set of practices which entails going beyond language associal semiotic and making use of two or multiple semiotic resources for meaningmaking, for instance, language, visual images, music, space, gesture and so on. In thehistorical context of global visual culture, everyday lives become more pervasivelymediated by multimodal discourse and are increasingly shaped by representationswhich are produced all over the world. Consequently, multimodal research is of greatsignificance in theory and practice.Drawing upon Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (1996) Visual Grammar (VG) based onSystemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL), the present study is to contribute to thisrelatively new field by using a model of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) asthe analytical tool in an attempt to provide a better understanding of the film Titanic,which got11Academy Awards and14Academy Award Nominees at the same time inthe history of Oscar. Four-dimensional film discourses involved in language, images,music, text, sound and other modals, which can help study the coordination ofdifferent modals in multimodal discourse. And at the same time, multimodal discourseanalysis also provides a new point for film studies.Firstly, the thesis makes a recount on the definition and development of the filmdiscourse and the multimodal discourse analysis, pointing out the goal and thesignificance of the research; secondly, based on the theoretical framework of thefunctional grammar and the visual grammar, the thesis uses a framework for themultimodal discourse analysis on the film Titanic. Then under the guidance of theframework, the film discourse is analyzed from the three meanings in visual grammar,namely, the representation meaning, interactive meaning and the compositionalmeaning; finally, visual modalities and audio modalities are analyzed syntheticallywith the aim to explore how these various modalities contributes to the overallmeaning conveyed by the film Titanic.Through the case study of the film discourse Titanic, it is found that the theory ofmultimodal discourse analysis, especially, the visual grammar possesses a strongapplicability on analyzing the film discourse. Not only does the research expand thefields of multimodal discourse analysis, but also provides audience a new perspectiveof appreciating the film by reflecting the role of modalities other than language indisclosing the theme of the film and ultimately elevates their appreciation level on thefilm.
