【摘要】 商务印书馆出版的《英语周刊》(English Weekly)在中国近现代期刊发展史、外语学习类期刊史、外语教育史、出版文化史上都占据着极其重要的地位。但是自从1987年《商务印书馆大事记》出版以来,受制于已有史料的束缚,学界对于《英语周刊》的办刊历史说法不一,难以达成定论。综合考察近期发现的多份不同类型的文献资料,可以发现上述说法皆不完整、准确。准确的表述方式应该是:《英语周刊》创刊于1915年10月2日,终刊于1941年12月,中间曾两度暂时停刊、又两度复刊。具体而言,它的办刊历史由三个阶段构成:第一个阶段从1915年10月2日至1932年1月16日,在此阶段共计公开发行837期,从第1期至837期;第二个阶段从1932年10月1日至1937年8月7日,在此阶段共计发行244期,从新第1期至新第244期;第三个阶段从1937年10月至1941年12月,在此阶段,商务发行的第1本《英语周刊》的具体期刊编号是新第245期和新第246期,两者为合刊出版,而《英语周刊》的出版地点由上海一地先后迁至长沙、香港两地。探寻历史真相,澄清历史事实,避免以讹传讹,从而有助于加深理解《英语周刊》在中国英语学习类期刊发展史、商务期刊出版史上所具有的重要学术价值和现实意义。更多还原

【Abstract】 English Weekly published by the Commercial Press takes a significant position in China’s history of the modern periodicals’ development,foreign language learning periodicals,foreign language education,and publishing culture history. However,since the publication of The Commercial Press Events in 1987,experts have different viewpoints on the publication history ofEnglish Weekly owing to the lack of historical documentaries. On the basis of a comprehensive survey of several different types of historical data found recently,none of the above-mentioned viewpoints is correct. To be precise,the initial issue of English Weekly was published on Oct.2nd,1915 and its final issue was in the December of 1941. Meanwhile it had ceased and then resumed publication twice. Its publication history,specifically,is composed of three periods: the first was from Oct. 2nd,1915 to Jan. 16 th,1932,during which 837 issues were published; the second was from Oct. 1st,1932 to Aug. 7th,1937,during which the 244 new issues were published; the third was from the October of 1937 to the December of 1941,during which the combined issue of New 245 and New 246 was published by the Commercial Press,and the place of publication was relocated from Shanghai to Changsha and then to Hong Kong. It is of great help to seek and clarify the historical truth and to avoid the communication of wrong information.
