【Abstract】 Madness has always been a favorite literary topic.By applying Foucault’s"Theory of Madness History",we can conduct a tentative study of madness in British literature,trying to make an exhaustive depiction of how"madness"was defined in different periods of time. The Renaissance was a golden age of madness that was regarded as"the Age of Rea- son".In classical times,madness was known as a moral degeneracy to be confined and shut away from the world.In modern times it became a mental disease and was treated by medical and psychiatric practices in the asylum.Through the study of madness,we can explore the changing relationship between madness and reason,finding how madness is defined and treated by various cultural,intellectual and economic structures within a given society.更多还原
