Another Side of the Autocratic Monarchy of the Tang Dynasty:Two Imperial Edicts Issued in the Second Year of Longshuo Under the Reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty
【Abstract】 Under the imperial system in ancient China, the emperor exercised the supreme state power, which could also be called "imperial power". Apart from the enactment of laws, the imperial power under the imperial system of the Tang Dynasty was usually realized through "the Emperor’s words"(王言), which was a routine expression of the imperial power. Then, how was the relationship between the emperor himself and the imperial power? In fact, they were not the same thing just as some scholars used to claim. Fortunately, two imperial edicts issued in the second year of Longshuo(龙朔) under the reign of Emperor Gaozong(唐高宗) could help to explain what it was like. This article is intended to reveal another side of the autocratic monarchy in the Tang Dynasty, by showing how Emperor Gaozong met with setbacks and became frustrated. Undoubtedly, this is helpful to generate a new understanding of the versatility of the autocratic monarchy in ancient China.
