On the Relationship Between Buddhist Monks and Nuns and Social Politics in Liu Song Dynasty
【Abstract】 Most of the rulers in Liu Song Dynasty advocated Buddhism since Emperor Wendi. The emperors, empresses, princes and princesses made donation to construct temples, which led to an intimate relationship between those favorite monks and nuns and royal court. Some of them took key positions and participated in the political decision making.Monk and nun group and their representatives could even play an important part in the shift of emperors and cabinets, whose impact on politics was not to be ignored. In addition, the vassal kings and chiefs assuming office or taking up a post outside of capital also gathered monks and nuns, some of whom were recruited into the think tank and could take part in political affairs apart from preaching Buddhist doctrines. Therefore, some monks and nuns exploited China’s traditional witchcraft predicting luck or disaster, controling voice and blinding people’s mind to win the ruler’s support. The intimate relationship between monks or nuns and politics pictures the secularization of the monk and nun’s life.
